Meet the Vladovic Family – The Force behind Spalato Gelateria!
Q: Can you give us some background information about your
family?
A: Originally from Yugoslavia, our family escaped from the war and
moved to Germany in 1992. Ten years ago, we immigrated to the
United States and fell in love with the ethnic diversity of Houston. Katy
iis the best place to live and that is why we opened our business here.
We love the people here.
Q: What prompted you to open up Spalato Gelateria & Cafe?
A:
We have always been really into gelatos, coffee, and European
desserts. Ever since we moved to Houston, we've never found an
authentic ice cream or coffee shop with the quality and taste we expected. That’s why we decided to marry our passion and business
together. And thus, Spalato Gelateria & Cafe is born: Our gelatos and
other delights offered on our menu are excellent. We make everything
fresh daily with the freshest ingredients and no preservatives. And when you come in any day of the week, you won’t see an unfamiliar face; we will greet with and treat you like an honored
guest in our home.
Q: What is the difference between regular ice cream-and gelato?
A: Huge! Gelato is better and less fattening. Gelato originated in
northern Italy in the 1500s and the sale of gelato was one of the major
sources of income for the area. So, at one point in history, only royalty
could afford gelato. Like ice cream, gelato is made with milk and sugar,
but it has less than 35% air which makes the flavors more intense than
traditional ice cream while still allowing it to be creamy and contains only
4 to 6 percent fat, versus 35% to 40% in regular ice-cream. But the
big difference is that the milk used in gelato is not homogenized. So
that allows the gelato to melt much more quickly than ice cream. The
basic ingredients of gelato are milk, cream, eggs, sugar, and natural
fresh flavors (like fruit, cocoa, nuts, or vanilla.) We make our gelatos
fresh daily and we only use the best ingredients.
Q: What other specialties do you offer besides gelato?
A: We offer a variety from salads and soups to grilled and authentic savory dishes from Central and Eastern Europe. We also
have the most delicious Panini’s, sweet and salty crepes, smoothies,
and scrumptious cakes as well as delightful, exotic teas from Asia. We serve the best espressos on this side of town and an assortment of hot and cold coffee beverages.
Our equipment and coffee are specially imported from Italy and we
are the only shop that offers this type of coffee in Houston.
Everything we have on our menu is made 100% from scratch woth fresh ingredients and no preservatives. So, freshness
is guaranteed.
Q: Do you do catering or parties?
A: Because we are not a franchise, we are very flexible. We can can accommodate parties and make whatever you like. Just come and talk with us and we will do our best to exceed your expectations!
